GB 19083 Technical Requirements for Medical Protective Masks

Technical Requirements for Medical Protective Masks is a mandatory national standard. The current version is numbered GB 19083-2010, issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of China, with an issuance date of September 2, 2010 and an implementation date of August 1, 2011. GB 19083-2023 was issued on November 27, 2023 (expected to be implemented on December 1, 2025), and will then supersede the 2010 version. The main technical requirements include core indicators such as filtration efficiency (filtration efficiency for non-oily particles ≥ 95%), fit (leakage rate), flame retardance, and resistance to liquids.

YY 0469 Surgical Masks

Surgical Masks is an industry standard. The current version is numbered YY 0469-2011, issued by the State Food and Drug Administration, with an issuance date of December 31, 2011 and an implementation date of June 1, 2013, replacing YY 0469-2004. This standard mainly specifies requirements for surgical masks such as filtration efficiency, bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE ≥ 95%), differential pressure (breathing resistance), and liquid barrier performance. Note: YY 0469-2023 has been issued and is an updated version.

Difference in Positioning Between the Two Types of Masks

Medical protective masks (GB 19083) are used in medical work environments to filter particulate matter in the air and block droplets, blood, body fluids, and secretions, with strict requirements on fit; surgical masks (YY 0469) are mainly used in operating rooms or similar medical environments, focusing on blocking blood and body fluids that may splash, with explicit provisions on liquid barrier performance.

Regulatory Classification

Both types of masks are classified as medical devices and may be marketed only after obtaining a product registration certificate or completing filing in accordance with the Regulations on the Supervision and Administration of Medical Devices and the Measures for the Registration and Filing of Medical Devices.
